The point of adding Junior is to distinguish a man from his father of the same name.

Assuming that:

* Bills mother isn't also a Peggy (in which case they might settle on calling one 'Peg')

* this is not a legal document (in which case it would be William K. Smith, Junior and Margaret P. Smith) and then simply 'Bill and Peggy Smith' is certainly acceptable for any personal mail such as Christmas cards, invitations, etc.

In an obituary, if Bill's uncle died they would be listed as 'Bill Smith, Jr and his wife Peggy'.

The traditional form of 'Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith, Jr' is still acceptable and always correct, but very much less common, as women prefer to be acknowledged in their own rights, not merely as an addition to their husbands.

Now that these rules are less strict, much of it comes down to personal preference. When in doubt, ask Bill and Peggy.

When addressing a business envelope where the husband is Mr. and the wife is Dr., the proper way to format the names is to list the titles in alphabetical order. Therefore, you would address the envelope as "Dr. and Mr. [Last Name]." For example: "Dr. and Mr. Smith." This shows respect for both titles.

Like the words mom, dad, uncle, etc, wife would be capitalized if it is used as a proper noun, like a name. If it is not a proper noun, it is not capitalized. For example, "Wife, bring me my slippers" vs "I would like my wife to bring me my slippers"

Do NOT, repeat NOT, use the widow's first name. You address the envelope just as though the husband were still alive. Example: Mrs. Robert Smith While that is the formal way address, in today's society, many women prefer to be addressed with their own first name. Neither is considered incorrect.

Proper salutation for a husband and wife with different last names?

Assuming a business letter to husband and wife with different last names who you don't know the proper business salutation is to have the the wife's name first before the husband's accompanied by the proper titles. For example: Dear Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Jones, (salutation on letter) Mrs. Susan Thompson and Mr. Jeremy Jones (address on envelope and letter) Note that you could use "Ms." instead of "Mrs." if you prefer, although I recommend that since in this example you know they are married I would choose "Mrs." Jim Lumley jimlumley@live.com
