A truncated family structure is pretty common in families across the US today. Psychologists and social workers frequently define truncated family to mean one where the two parents may live under the same roof, but their relationship is hostile and the children have begun taking sides with one parent or another. This type of situation often leads to separation and divorce if it is not carefully addressed. Children living in this negative environment frequently act out in school, rebel at home and may become promiscuous or start using drugs and alcohol.
