The best thing you can do, is to stop calling him. Every time you call him, it destroys whatever chance or reason he might have otherwise had to call you. So, as hard as it may seem, make yourself busy.
Additionally, don't be available when he calls and then still don't call him back! Give him some 'time' if he's that upset. Trust me and do this! I guarantee after just a few day's of you avoiding him, he'll be so curious with what you might be doing (since you're not calling him!) that he'll completely forget why he was upset. Not to mention that during such 'time' (that you're not bugging & reminding him why he's upset) allows him a chance to further think about the situation and possibly gain a different perspective. After which, he may even call to surprise you with an apology.
