Sally Seton was Clarissa's closest friend and a person that she experienced genuine love for. The "most exquisite" moment of Clarissa's life was one in which Sally picked a flower for her and kissed her on the lips, before they were interrupted by Peter Walsh.

More than that, Sally represents freedom and passion. She opened Clarissa's eyes to a world of ideas the likes of which she had never seen before, from Shelley's poetry to Morris's philosophy.
