In a dating relationship, even if a couple was going steady, it was perfectly acceptable that they did not have sex. Though some had sex, the mindset at the time was to wait until marriage, and most did. It was; however, common for couples to park in a secluded spot and "make out." That involved kissing and might involve some intimate touching. Though some believe girls got married young, perhaps as young as 13, it was common for couples to wait until they graduated from high school and possibly college.

In a parent-child relationship, parents definitely were authority figures. Children were expected to mind their parents and to behave themselves properly at school and anywhere in public. Spanking was a common punishment. Parents also used taking away privileges and having to stand in a corner was common, but more so at school than at home. Children had chores and were taught to show respect to their elders. Back-talking and being disrespectful were not tolerated in parent-child relationships.

The teacher-student relationship was much the same as parent-child relationships. Kids knew better than to back-talk or disrespect their teachers because not only would they get in trouble in school, but it was likely that they would also be in trouble when they got home. It was different back then, though. Schools were small; most had only one classroom per grade. Teachers and parents usually knew each other pretty well, too. In the mid to late 60s, schools began to consolidate and became bigger.
