I have no idea why you would consider this man is lying. He obviously loved her very much, but perhaps they both wanted careers, had to study hard and didn't have the time to date, or perhaps he couldn't afford to go to the same school as her or possibly it was a private school. These things happen. He must have been very hurt by that and perhaps she was too. It's really none of your business as he gave you a good enough explanation when he didn't have too.
