Corporal punishment evolved along with every other form of social control. What we now call "spanking", meaning striking the buttocks in a formal, controlled way, probably originated in England a few centuries ago. Nearly all cultures have some form of corporal punishment of children, however.

Imagine it. A small cave - boy has just deliberately disobeyed his parents and eaten an extra piece of mammoth they were saving. A parent reaches out to hit him, and he gets him on his buttocks. He notices his child does not undergo to much pain so he/she pulls the boy over their lap and smacks their buttocks repeatedly until they see clear signs of repentance. The parent then decides to use this as a punishment in future when they see there are no bruises or welts the next day. Thus, spanking is born.

The main point is-don't spank your children. If you do, they will do the same wrongdoing.

according to article: spanking was used in ancient Greece to increase fertility in women. Later is was used Catholics as a way to remove sins after confession. The practice of using spanking as a punishment is rather recent.

Corporal punishment was not invented, all animals use some form of negative re-enforcement on their young. Learning to associate a negative response with an undesirable behaviour is common. A mother bear will cuff a cub for being too rough. Example: biting a nipple when feeding. A puppy will get nipped by its mother for wandering away or being too slow to follow.
