Answer Surnames ending in -by are Scandinavian in origin.
There are two theories. That the surnames Soulsby and Soulby both originate in Cumbria, England; a village called Soulby. This is Viking in origin. The other is more romantic; that the De Soulis family of Hermitage Castle left in 1322 and changed their name to Soulsby. They are supposed to have been at Norham Castle soon after and the name has been associated with the Rothbury area ever since. I have traced my ancestors back there to the 17th century through the Parish Registers and the Parish Church Magazine. I think others have gone much further. Names to look for; Black Soulis, John de Soulis, Ranulf de Soulis. There is both historical information and legend.
