There is speculation that in prehistoric, tribal and 'primitive' cultures mothers (of fathers) weaned their children from breast feeding by chewing up solid food into a warm pap and then passing it from their own mouth into their infants mouth - rather in the same way that parent birds feed their nestlings.

This oral contact in a context of emotional bonding and nurturing was then developed and extended into the significant cultural ritual that we employ today.
