Samuel Smiles was the father of the self help movement. In 1859 he self published the book Self Help which became a best seller the first year and by 1904 had sold a quarter of a million copies. A Scottish politician in Victorian England, he was a proponent of social and political reform.

His book centered around the idea that people must use their resources to better themselves rather than become accustomed to poverty by inaction. He advanced the notion that the poor could raise themselves from poverty into middle class by their own actions; a revolutionary idea at the time.
