IVF is most appropriate for a woman over the age of 21 who has demonstrated 12 months of unprotected intercourse (6 months for a woman over 35) that has not resulted in a pregnancy for a variety of reasons. Or prior knowledge of a condition that would prohibit conception without medical intervention.

IVF is also an option for a woman who has the ability to conceive but for many reasons is unable to carry a pregnancy. Her egg and partners sperm are joined and implanted into a surrigate. A woman who has no biological connection to the baby but provides her womb as a sort of loaner incubator for 9 months. At birth the baby is then turned over to the biological parents.

IVF or one of the newer techniques allows a woman who otherwise would never experience pregnancy to carry a child. This would include women who due to age, medical condition or prior sterilization are unable to conceive on their own. Using her own eggs or a donors, an egg fertilized by her partner or donor sperm. Women can carry a baby that has no biological connection but the act of carrying and nurturing a pregnancy would certainly make most women feel like a natural mother.
