You are wrong in thinking all men choose work over family. Only some men choose work over family. And, in deed, some women as well. Happiness to me, and I'm a man, is spending time with my family and making them happy. I want nothing more. For other men, happiness is found in satisfaction of their own egos. They desire a sense of self-importance aka a passion for something else besides family life. Ego is a very powerful force - and may overcome even love of one's family. As ego is not love, it can be very selfish and destructive.
