Why do women pretend that they don't know that a man is trying to ask them for a date?

There are two reasons that are most common, though this is not to say that these are the only two.

1. They do not want to go out with him.

Even if a woman doesn't like you, she most likely does not want to hurt your feelings and make things awkward. She is hoping that if she doesn't encourage you, you'll give up and thus save everyone the awkward turn-down (or, even worse, the awkward pity date followed by even more awkward second date rebuttal).

2. You're not sending clear signals.

She doesn't get it. Maybe she's not the sharpest tool in the shed. maybe you're being too subtle. Maybe she's not sure she's reading your signals correctly. Either way, why are you taking so long to ask her out that there's so much confusion? Just do it.
