All these definitely contribute to low self esteem. So anything you say that seems to take a similar path of what he is used to, then of course it will appear to be an insult and automatically get defensive. What you can do is not try to help him, you should however leave him because this could be a serious and very serious sign that he will become abusive to you. The only way for your man to really change his ways is to talk to someone. He should admit to his problems and then make an effort to pray and seek some kind of therapy. He shall acknowledge his past and try to find out what really led up to his anger and low self esteem and dissolve them. From there he is on his way to improvement. But initially he must recognize he has a problem and seek help.
