This happens cause most people feel the need to be the dominant one in the group. If your the leader and the first to pick on others it is less likely to happen to you. Most people are very insecure and hope that by bullying others they will be able to deflect it from themselves. The best way to deal with situations like this is to simply walk away or not give the bullies what they are looking for your reaction. Simply deal with it with a smile because it confuses them and they end up believing you don't care what they thinlk.
It really sucks trust me but if you are someone famous and you were pick on wen you were little and the people look up to you I laugh at thos jerks!
