Gold is valued mainly for its use in jewelry (although it does have some other uses, it is used by dentists to make crowns for damaged teeth, and it is used in some types of electronic circuitry, in the form of extremely thin wires). It is very decorative, has a lovely metallic yellow color, and is soft enough that it can easily be formed into any shape you like. People have been making gold jewelry and decorations for thousands of years, and the weight of tradition is very persuasive.

Cost wise, however, gold is not the most valuable mineral in most cases. Diamonds, plutonium, rhodium, californium and many other minerals are often more expensive.
