The question should be phrased "Does writing make you smarter" and in response to this i would suggest Yes, although reading is also very important in giving you intellectual phrases to use improving people's perception of your mind, making you smarter.
Your question is not well phrased. The law allows someone to kill to defend themselves, they nevertheless still have to prove such a circumstance. Should a person be allowed to kill in self-defense? That is a personal choice.
