There as many different answers for that question as there are people that swing, it's not an easy thing to describe to people that don't have the mentality to do it themselves (according to a study in 2009 approximately 12% of the population of the United States were either polyamorous or had been at some point in their lives).

The basic answer is that humans are social animals, we crave interaction and companionship. Swingers crave a bit more than that and have the capacity to separate sex and emotional commitment. Being able to be with someone other than your mate can do several things for a poly couple as well, it gives you new fantasy material for your alone times, it allows you to try something (someone?) new on occasion & prevents stagnation of your sex life and sex drive, and really, the people you meet in the lifestyle are gerneraly the most open and honest people you'll ever meet.
