If you think you might be pregnant, you should do a few things: 1) Stop drinking alcohol and smoking to help prevent low birth weight and possible mental impairments. 2) Start taking a folic acid vitamin to help prevent birth defects. 3) Get a home pregnancy test. Take it. 4) Schedule an appointment with your doctor to do a pregnancy test. 5) Consider how to tell the father and/or anyone else who might need to know about the situation. Often you wait a few months to tell friends, employers, etc. since there is a higher risk of miscarriage early in the pregnancy. These steps will get you started. If you find out you are pregnant, you'll have to consider more options: childcare, whether or not to keep the baby, etc. Remember, too, that if you decide you don't want to keep the baby, you have a lot of options, including giving it away--no questions asked--to a hospital or fire station.
