So some sort of vampire wouldn't necessarily be out of the question. Similar legends can be found in cultures throughout the world and is often referred to as shapeshifting by anthropologists. It is in fact in the quileute legend that 2 monsters often had battle. Now were these in fact a shapeshifter and wolf fighting? Who knows. But something occurred at the boundary between Elwha and Quileute territory. The site has more information on the subject.
