It depends on where you obtained the book. If a library, they will gladly accept your return. If a bookstore/shop, bring your original receipt with the book for a refund in the original payment method (cash, check, charge). Some very trusting, larger bookstores will accept a return without a receipt, but only in exchange for store credit at the book's current sale price, which may not be what you paid for it.

If you purchased the book on Amazon or another on-line bookseller, they will have instructions on their website on how to return a purchase. Textbooks often have special rules, as many academic textbooks are wrapped for protection and cannot be returned once the wrap is broken. Many 3rd-party sellers who provide books through Amazon will have their own return policies, often with a time limit on the period after which no returns are accepted. Other, more private on-line book sales (as through eBay or a direct seller's website) the return policies may be even more specific and restrictive, such as "no returns" on used books purchased through eBay.

Of course, if you can't return the book or if the seller gives you too much trouble, you can always re-sell the book through one or more of those on-line methods, or you might find a used book outlet that takes trade-in books (at a much reduced value) in return for store credit.
