Mechanically, there should be no problem shooting a pistol at any orientation with respect to gravity: sideways, upside down--whatever. However, the gun's sites won't be as effective if the weapon isn't verticle.
There are BB guns that are gravity fed, these would require the pistol be held upright while chambering a BB. After that, it could be fired in any orientation.
Of course, there are always exceptions, but I cannot think of any, besides the bb gun.

I have seen people shoot accurately at 100 yards or more with a .38 pistol. However, in general, a pistol bullet can travel, on average, about a mile.
