I actually think he was sentenced to death. But Atticus wanted to appeal it to the supreme court justice. Unfortunately Tom tried to run away from the situation and died doing so. If by cave you mean the prison he was sent to after being convicted, then he tried to climb the fence, and would have made it if not for his shriveled arm. Instead of escaping, he dies from 17 shots through his body with guns.
