Opinions may vary, but generally, the film adaptations of War of the Worlds have received mixed reviews in terms of staying faithful to the original novel. Some viewers appreciate the modern updates and visual effects, while others feel that certain elements were changed or omitted that detracted from the essence of the original story.
Especially if it is a good novel, I would prefer if the film stay fairly close to the original story, as presented in the book.
Not very good
A movie based on a novel can be changed as example if the film would be too long. In some cases the screen writer changes the film's script to avoid or add scenes that are too graphic or not graphic enough. Some films add content as following the novel's storyline is too short. A good example of a famous film based on a novel is East of Eden. It's a long novel by John Steinbeck. The film came out in the mid 1950's and starred, among others, James Dean. The production company involved in putting the novel to the screen felt that the length of the novel would be too long, thus the movie titled East of Eden was shortened.
