Elizabeth's tries to make decisions that are rational, or based on logic, but is not always able to do so.

One problem is that the premises she works on are sometimes wrong, and so she does not always reach the proper conclusion. She decides Darcy is arrogant and unkind based partly on her own overhearing him saying that she was not handsome enough to tempt him, and that he would not dance. But she also bases her attitude toward Darcy on lies told by Wickham.

Another problem she has is that her observations are often subjective and wrong. She trusts Wickham because of his appearance. What she should have done was to question his actions. Late in the book, she realizes that Wickham's statements about Darcy were inappropriately told to her, and that many of Wickham's other statements or actions exceeded propriety. She should have been more guarded about judging him, and realizes she had been taken in. In retrospect, she realizes that thoughts she believed were rational were actually not.

Why was the original title of Pride and Prejudice altered?

Pride and arrogance are two very different terms, which are often confused by many people at times. Mr Darcy has pride due to the fact he is of a high social class and is admired by many. Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and instantly develops a prejudice against him, so the title Pride and Prejudice fits really well.

How darcy show prejudice in Pride and Prejudice?

Darcy's shows his prejudice against the lower class. He treats them with ill respect and as my mother demonstrated to me, he shows this disrespect to Lizzy. When he asks her to marry her first, he says some rather rude and degrading things. He came in without any doubt that he would refuse her because its a privedged to be loved by him- and through this, his prejudice is shown. Read the first proposal of marraige he makes her for more clarity.

What is Jane Austen saying about Pride and Prejudice in the novel Pride and Prejudice?

Darcy's pride and Elizabeth's initial prejudice towards Darcy (based solely on her first impression of him) caused misunderstandings between the two. Hence, it was an obstacle to their relationship. It was only when Darcy let down his pride and Elizabeth put aside her prejudice towards him that they are able to clear up their misunderstand, and develop their relationship. Therefore in my opinion, Jane Austen is trying to discourage pride and prejudice. The book Pride and Prejudice is about how two people fall in love with each other despite the negative feelings they had towards each other at the beginning of their relationship. Elizabeth Bennet had a mistaken impression of Darcy, and was prejudiced against him from the start. Darcy was a man of pride and he didn't make a secret of it. This pride was dashed when he fell in love with Elizabeth. Finally, Elizabeth also accepted him when he let go of his pride and showed her exactly what sort a gentleman he was. This book is about how pride and prejudice almost cost two people a lifetime of happiness together. It is a wonderful book with a lot of values and also insight into the lifestyle of Jane Austen's time.
