Reading skills help you understand more than just plot and setting! If you think as you read, you'll understand everything. Ask yourself questions like "what is happening in this story?" or "where does the story take place?" and you'll start understanding more and more. The key is to think about what you're reading instead of just looking at the words.

Characters help us to understand the theme of a story because the actions and thoughts of a character explain to the reader what is going on. Without characters a story would just be a group of words.
The setting is where and when the story occurs. If you don't have a setting, it's very hard to understand and enjoy the plot.
The exposition usually provides background information about the setting, characters, and conflict of the story to help the reader understand the context of the narrative. It sets the stage for the plot to unfold and gives readers essential information to follow the story effectively.
