Science Fiction people call this world building. What color sun or suns does your planet have? How strong is the gravity on your planet. How hot or cold is your planet? Then think of the alien plants and animals that may be on your planet. You might want to read Orson Scott Card's book called How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy.
We landed on Corvis III, which has two red suns in the sky. We had to keep our suits on because there is not enough oxygen in the atmosphere. Thankfully there was some liquid water and we were able to get samples.

Desert and tropical rainforest do not describe the landscape of the Atlantic provinces. The landscape of the Atlantic provinces typically includes rugged coastline, rolling hills, forests, and lakes.
In the most bizzare sense, one would have to use a binary method and or pictures to describe with a universal language what the microwave does with either hand pointing and showing of fingers as a system of counting, then show them the demension of the microwave to that particular alien. However depending upon the type of alien, they may have telepathy or even understand what one could be saying through some means of tapping into the other beings mind.
