The most common story is that Robin met John Little while crossing a stream on a log or narrow bridge. Since neither wants to back up; they decide to spar with quarterstaffs to see who will give way. After a fierce battle John wins the fight by knocking Robin into the stream. While at first Robin is angry, he relents and offers John his friendship; and asks him to join his band. As part of his initiation, John Little is baptized by Friar Tuck, who either drunk or joking changes John Little's name to "Little John".
Little John was Robin's friend till death. In fact it was Little John that buried him.
