She made conversation with Mr. Cunningham, and he realized he was doing a bad thing.
Scout, Jem, and Dill confront them in the end causing them to leave because of Scouts awkward conversations with the men.
Atticus said, "No, we don't have mobs and that nonsense in Maycomb. I've never heard of a gang in Maycomb."

Scout was responsible for the men leaving the jail.
Atticus is worried that Tom is going to be lynched. He sits in front of the jail and a group of men shows up intending to do just that. Scout intervenes and inadvertently causes the men to disband before doing any violence.
Because Atticus was trying to defend Tom Robinson and protect the mob from causing harm to him. They even had to change him to another jail because of the people of Maycomb trying to get at him. (They weren't so much after Atticus as they were trying to get him out of the picture, in order to hurt Tom Robinson...) I hope this helps a little :)
Atticus explains to Scout that the people in mobs there or anywhere else are the people are neighbors, friends and relatives. He tells her that what she said to Mr. Cunningham about his son, it snapped him back to reality and allowed him to remember that he was a neighbor, a father and a neighbor, not the type of man to get involved with mobs.
I know the answer to the first part of the question. He compares the mob to wild animals. So it took an eight-year-old child to bring 'em to their senses, didn't it?" ... "That proves something-- that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they're still human." .. Sorry if it wasn't much help ):
The basic event in the 1st chapter is Scout telling the end of the story without getting in to, to much detail. So, you won't know what will happen at the end. Another event is Scout telling the beginning of what started everything.
Atticus is waiting at the jail to protect Tom Robinson from a lynch mob that wants to take vigilante action against him. Atticus shows his courageous and principled character by standing up for what is right in the face of a hostile crowd.
I dont know why hes afriad go read the bookHe says he was afraid that Atticus was gonna get hurt. He was scared the men that came to the house discussing Tom Robinson's placement before trial were a gang and that Atticus was in danger.
