It depends on what "people like us" refers to. People who value books take care of them by putting them up when they are not reading them and not bending pages or abusing them while reading them. People who are indifferent or do not not value books as much may just toss them somewhere when they are not being read or not take care of them very well. Those people who do not value them at all don't take care of them. They may leave them where they might be damaged, bend pages while they are reading them, or even intentionally damage them.
