I wrote a paper on this once. Piggy's glasses represent civilization by lighting the fire because it was viewed as a metaphor for coming out of darkness (the dark ages) into a time of light and reason (the renaissance). It can be seen as the development of mankind and civilization through out the ages.

What do piggys glasses serve as?

They are a symbol of order and intelligence, and a link to making fire for rescue. As they get slowly destroyed throughout the novel (taken, one lens smashed, then stolen) it shows the breaking down of order. However, he is short sighted, so his lenses would not have magnifiedd the sun and therefore not started a fire. In this case Golding has chosen to put symbolism above the reality of the story

What symbols does Golding use to show that civilization has been destroyed on the island Lord of the Flies?

the symbols i found to represent civilization and order were the conch shell, the rescue fire (truly meaning the DESIRE to return), and piggys glasses. you might notice that through the book as more people turn to the savagery of jack, the rescue fire starts being neglected. this means the group lost the desire to be rescued. then when all hell really breaks loose is when the group commits their first true on purpose murder, to piggy. his glasses are broken, the last sensible one is KILLED, and the conch is shattered. the kids dont even care at this point, and attack ralph. this shows that without civilization, people revert to their true terrible self. i hope this helped :)

What does the signal fire mean in the lord of the flies?

The glasses symbolize the voice of reason and logic among the boys. Piggy defends his glasses even more than the conch. Piggy, who represents the superego of the boys' (and society's) collective personality, uses his glasses to find solutions to the boys' problems. The most important solution the glasses find is the lighting of the fire, the boys' best chance of being rescued.

How do the boys start the fire?

They steal the glasses from one of the boys and use the lenses as a magnifying glass.Jack seized Piggy's spectacles and Ralph then uses them as a burning glass to focus the Sun's rays and start a fire. Their intention is to build a signal fire, which can attract any passing ships or planes. However their over enthusiasm leads the boys to build an enormous bonfire which eventually collapses in on itself and releases a shower of sparks which set fire to a patch of jungle further down the mounatin.Use Piggy's glasses.
