Your question is rather self-explanatory. Now if your asking about formats, there are many writing softwares out there that can assist you. The one I'm most fond of is yWriter5. In a simple word document, make each chapter a separate file. That's about all you can do!

You have to feel for the characters, and connect their emotions to yours. If you are interested in it enough, you will almost become that character.

Try to find a way to relate to them. If the character has divorced parents and so do you, there is a connection. It helps if the connection is an important connection, but even both having dogs can help you relate.
