Writing an assignment is the same as any other sort of writing. Decide what topic you will use - or use the one assigned to you - and decide if you are writing a fiction or nonfiction story.

Do your research and find out as much about your topic as you can. Then start writing.

Once you have gotten all the information on your page, it's time to edit. Go through your story and check spelling, punctuation, and grammar. You might try reading it out loud or having someone else read it to be sure that it says what you wanted to say and says it in the best way you can write it.

Here are some specific ideas for different kinds of stories:

Adventure Stories

When writing an adventure, you want to cut as much non-action as you can. Start in the middle of the action and keep things exciting. Write about what's happening, and add suspense to keep the readers interested.

Mystery Stories

When writing a mystery story, you need to work out your plot ahead of time so that all your clues will fall into place. You want a big enough puzzle to keep the readers interested, but not too many complications or it just gets out of hand. Mystery stories are good stories to outline - list all of the clues, red herrings, puzzles, and crimes that you will include in your story and make certain that each one is wrapped up by the end of the story.

Romance Stories

When writing romance, use lots of emotion. Tell how your characters react to one another and show how they feel. Keep a conflict up between the main characters up until the point where they realize that they are in love.

Spooky Stories

When writing a scary or gothic story, you want to keep things dark. Have a sense of foreboding, whether with a real monster or just something scary hanging over the characters. Keep the readers wondering whether the scary things will happen or whether the characters will escape.

Spy Stories

Spy stories are special adventure stories written about a person who collects information about the enemy and helps to bring that enemy down (or at least, to inconvenience them and thwart their dastardly plans). Have plenty of suspense and action, and be sure to research things like weaponry, geography, and different cultures so that your spy doesn't do something in the story that a real spy would never do.

Science Fiction Stories

Science Fiction relies on science - you need to have a firm grasp of how things work in order to write possible variations such as life on another planet or space travel. Have good believable characters that the reader will care about, and a logical plot. Many science fiction stories are character-driven, which means they explore the lives of the characters, and the science fiction is actually more in the background.

Fantasy Stories

Fantasy in modern writing has come to mean a story where things happen without a "good" scientific explanation, such as magic, fairy tale creatures, or vampires. To write good fantasy, you need believable characters and a good plot which will either explain how things work in your world or use the fantastic elements to help the characters solve their problems. Put in plenty of adventure and exotic locations!
