Huck couldn't ever remember being civilized. Everyone knew him as the homeless, troublesome boy that every young man envied. When Widow Douglas adopted him, Huck thought that it was going to be fun to be civilized like Tom, but then, Widow Douglas and her servants pushed him too hard and he realized that wearing suffocating clothes, and eating with the proper utensils was just pushing it. Huck loved to be that free, mindless boy that everyone knew him by. Living under one roof and being reprimanded just got too hard for him. But then Tom t`alked to Widow Douglas and basically asked her to ease up on Huck and let him still feel partly independent and free.
Huck prefers living on the river... opposed to being civilized by Aunt Sally, who offers to adopt Huck.
