Before the school year had begun Scout had thought of school as a place to thrive and grow as a student. She thought that the teachers would not only want the children to learn, but she thought that the other children would be more self-driven liek herself. What Scout soon realizes is that just like most other things in Maycomb the teachers care more about their image and being like everyone else. On the first day of school Scout is penalized for knowing how to read ( AT SCHOOL), she quickly notices that some of maycombs most intelligent people never even went to school.
During one winter, Scout witnesses a rare snowfall in Maycomb, which shocks her as it is an aberration of nature being in the South. The unseasonal snow in Maycomb adds to the eerie atmosphere that surrounds Boo Radley's house, making Scout feel uneasy and adding to the suspense in the story.
Dill is not coming to Maycomb this summer because his mother has remarried and they are staying with his new family. Scout feels sad and lonely without Dill's presence, as he is one of her closest friends and they share many adventures together. She misses his imaginative spirit and companionship.
Scout describes her father, Atticus, as different from other fathers because he's older and wears glasses. She explains that they feel lucky to have a good father who is not excessively involved in their activities like other parents in Maycomb. Scout views her father with a sense of pride and admiration.
Scout is saying that they made Walter (who is from a different social class) feel so welcomed that the fact that they were socially different was forgotten and Walter felt in the same class as Scout and his family.
He didnt feel loved when he was with his mother.
The woman at Cal's church who made Scout feel unwelcome was Lula. She criticized and questioned Scout's presence at the African American church service, causing discomfort for Scout and Cal.
Miss Gates is Scout's third grade teacher. She is a hypocritical and prejudiced woman. Miss Gates shows lots of sympathy for the Jews in Germany during the class discussion on current events. But Scout overhears her talking about how the black community in Maycomb should be oppressed and feel inferior to whites. Miss Gates has two conflicting ideas on the treatment of people.
Scout feels guilty at school after her teacher, Miss Caroline, scolds her for being able to read and write. This incident makes Scout feel bad for making Miss Caroline embarrassed in front of the class.
At the end of the first day of school in "To Kill a Mockingbird," Miss Caroline Fisher feels frustrated, overwhelmed, and out of place. She is unaccustomed to the ways of Maycomb and is struggling to connect with her students.
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" was said by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his 1933 presidential inaugural address. The country was in the depths of the Great Depression, and Roosevelt was elected in the hopes that he would be able to lift the country our of the Depression. He inaugural address is inspiring, including the above line. When Scout describes Maycomb, she gives minute details regarding the look and feel of the town. In order to put the town, and therefore the events and book into a larger time frame, the author (Harper Lee) makes this reference to Roosevelt's speech. It also sets the stage for some frightening events that will occur in Maycomb and as foreshadowing that everything will be all right if the characters can remain brave.
