How does Steinbeck present the relationship between George and Lennie in the novella?

Steinbeck presents Lennie's and George's at the start, as George been the leader, and Lennie been the one that follows George, and is always dependant on him. Also later on in the novella it prove's that George is very protective over Lennie and always has to remind him what to do in a dangerous circumtance. They are both dependant on eachother really, as The Great Depression was going on, and not many people had anyone, they where normally lonley, and working on ranches on there own, Steinbeck is trying to show that what Lennie and George have or shall i say "had" wasn't very common in those days.

Actually, no. They were portrayed as brothers, so to speak. They went every where together, even though George shot Lennie in the end of the book. George was with Lennie so long because Lennie had a mental condition, and he was like a true brother. George and Lennie's relationship could be described as a master/dog relationship, in that Lennie follows George wherever he goes. There relationship is also much like a parent/child in that George is constantly telling Lennie not to do things, and telling him off. This tells us that George cares about Lennie, however the reader may question George's motives, because why would a man want to hang out with a man like Lennie?

Steinbeck uses dialogue to show George’s frustration that Lennie’s simple minded nature makes life difficult for them: “You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get.” At the time, due to the Great Depression, it would have been extremely difficult for people to get and keep employment. Steinbeck uses the character of Lennie as a way of highlighting those difficulties. At the start of the novel, we encounter Lennie and George as they have run away from another of Lennie’s mindless actions in Weed. Yet again, George’s character has been forced out of a paying job and made to flee in order to look after Lennie. The way in which Steinbeck uses dialogue to allow George to fire his anger at Lennie allows the reader to also take into consideration the fact that Lennie is really needed by George to gain employment in the harsh American era Steinbeck references: Lennie can do the heavy lifting.
