It is an excellent symbol for Doodle because the bird dies from over exertion at the same time that Brother is pushing Doodle to exert himself in learning to run and swim before school starts. The ibis is out of its natural habitat when it dies by flying so far during the storm, just as Doodle is out of his element by trying to run and play when he had health defects that made it nearly impossible to do those things.
