as a very wealthy man
In "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, Colonel Sherburn states that the mob borrows its power from the cowardice of the individuals in it. He argues that the strength of a mob comes from the fact that people feel safe to act recklessly when they are part of a group, rather than acting with courage as individuals.
Col. Sherburn
It was a man named "Boggs" he was the so called town drunk in Arkansas and Colonel Shelburne got fed up and shot him, because he kept threatening to hurt people. Then after he shot him, the townspeople got upset and threatened to lynch him, only to be told by Shelburne that they were a bunch of cowards.
It's not specifically mentioned, but he was described as a Commandant at Auschwitz.
