How is theme conveyed?

In literature, a theme is an underlying, usually universal message that the author of the book is trying to convey to the reader. He or she can do this through use of character, setting, language, description, symbol, and plot structure, just to name a few. For instance, in A Tale of Two Cities, one could argue that one possible theme is, "Hatred is a curved blade, and causes those who hate to become exactly what they despise." This theme is emphasized through the character of Madame Defarge, who fights the overthrow the bourgeoisie, but ultimately acquires the characteristics that caused the proletariat to rebel in the first place: ruthlessness, apathy toward suffering, and elitism. The theme is also brought out by the instance of wine spillage in the first book, for when everyone drinks the wine that runs through the streets, it foreshadows the blood they will later have on their hands. Many of the descriptors in the chapters reiterate this theme as well. This is, of course, only one example, but the general characteristics that bring out theme can be applied across the board.

So long as you can back up your idea of what the theme of the story is, your teacher should give you credit. You explain it by using quotes from the story or book, and by telling why you feel that is the theme based on those quotes.

To find a theme, ask yourself "What is the author trying to tell us?" or "What is the underlying message in this story?" It's not usually stated flat-out, but you can tell what the theme is based on things that get stressed or repeated in the story.
