The resolution is actually pretty ambiguous. Pi survives and is found on shore. He has to tell the story of what happened to him, and tells two versions, leaving it up to the reader to decide which is true: the one with the animals he spent time telling in the story, or one that replaces the animals with human beings from the ship he was on.
