Catalina is an island. Its full name is Santa Catalina Island. Politically it's part of Los Angeles county in California; physically it's about 20 miles from the mainland. It's a popular resort destination (where do people who already live in a place that's a resort destination for much of the country ... i.e. southern California ... go for their own vacations? Catalina is one option). It's difficult, but not actually impossible, to swim there from the mainland... there's a group of lunatics^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Henthusiasts that occasionally do so. I've never read the book, but from the cover and the blurb I'm guessing that it might be meant at least partially figuratively, that doing something difficult, dangerous, and potentially fatal would be like "swimming to Catalina".
Catalina Bono's birth name is Catalina Bono Zrate.
