Beowulf is considered the ideal epic hero for numerous reasons. First you must look at an epic hero. What values and morals are in an epic hero? Well, there is bravery, courage, lack of greed, and many others. Beowulf most certainly achieves all of these when he battles Grendel, his mother and the dragon he demonstrates bravery and courage. He lacks greed when he does not keep the dragon's treasure for himself but shares it with his people. Now another thing is that an epic hero protects his/her culture. Beowulf shows that he protects his culture because, well, he defends his culture 'till the death. You can also look at history, soon after the approximate time of when Beowulf died the Geats were conquered and their culture vanished, thus Beowulf preserved the culture till his death. On the other hand he may not be completely an epic hero because many heroes live in prosperity in there older years. For example Odysseus from Greek mythology, suffers and conquers all the troubles to get home, losing his whole crew, being a practical sex slave for 7 years, finally getting home and having to fight off the suitors, and then having to make peace with Poseidon; though eventually he enjoys his old years in Greece prosperous. Beowulf is not necessarily this type of epic hero since he does die in battle and does not live on, despite that his death is a noble death which leaves him with the glory of an epic hero.
