You can kill a character any way you like -- you're the author!

The best way is to make the death logical to the story. For example, if your plot involves a river, you might have the character drown in a flood or die trying to rescue someone else. Try not to have some sort of weird sudden death just pop out of nowhere -- be sure to foreshadow the death so the reader isn't totally surprised when someone dies.


Also keep in mind that readers are not going to be happy if you've developed a character and gotten them to like him or her only to kill them off at the end.
