While the definition of fiction is that which is not real (it is made up), good fiction has to come from somewhere. Some books, called historical fiction, are based on real events, but ultimately untrue. Other fiction books that are not historically based also have to have at least a small base of reality, because every writer needs an inspiration.

The fiction portion of the work are usually character dialogue, thoughts and interactions that are not documented at the time of the event(s). The author takes upon himself/herself to interpret documented facts to fit the points the author is attempting to establish.

To determine the validity of the points "established", the reader needs to evaluate the author's knowledge of the events of the work. Even though the author might not have a degree in history, tat does not mean they have not researched the events. Ideally the author will list works for further reading and an annotated bibliography.
