I believe there are at least two examples, if not more of pathetic fallacy, or anthropomorphic fallacy, inThe Cask of Amontillado.

  • One example is as the two men journey further into the crypt and Poe describes the bones lining one of the walls to be laying "promiscuously against the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size."
  • Another possible example could be once Montresor has sealed the entry way of Fortunato's tomb, and he persistently calls to him, with no reply, and he reveals eerily, "My heart grew sick-on account of the dampness of the catacombs."

Bones can't have human sexual behavior and hearts can't actually grow sick in the way implied.
