Adonis, Greek mythology. A beautiful youth desired by both Persephone (wife of Hades, lord of the dead) and Aphrodite, goddess of love. Zeus ordered the two goddesses to "share" him. One day, on a hunt with Aphrodite, Adonis was gored by a boar, and died to Aphrodite's great grief. It is said that each drop of his blood that fell to the ground caused a crimson blossom to spring up.
