A day no pigs would die is about Robert peck who is a shaker which is a cult sort of like baptists only more remote as well as living on a farm and doing many chores such as roping oxen and saving cattle from dying which earns him the reward of a new piglet who he decides to name pinky and treats it as a pet until they run out of food and have to kill it and eat it which is one of the last things that happens before haven dies but fortunately they now have food for the funeral in the form of pinky the pig although Robert is fairly distressed because pinky was his only true friend and now she is being eaten as well as one time earlier in the book where a dog is put in a barrel and forced to fight a weasel which doesn't turn out as good as they'd hoped and eventually haven is forced to shoot it although this happens before haven finds out he is dying and Robert is too young to understand the severity of the situation.
