He is a sickly little boy.
Very frail and skinny.
And I think he's really pale too.
And short.
Doodle is bleeding and stains his neck and shirt with blood. He dies red and far from home just like the Ibis.
I don't remember there being a bleeding tree, but I do remember the bird that falls and breaks its neck and it start to bleed. That I can tell you symbolizes the premonition that the boy's brother will die and look a lot like the bird did when he does. Hope this was somewhat relevant, I read this story in English last year. :~D I think maybe the bleeding tree symbolizes the remembrance of Doodle because it was where the scarlet ibis was found and died so maybe it was like a symbol of remembrance of Doodle much like the empty cradle? Like maybe how people leave flowers on someone's grave in their remembrance, the bleeding tree symbolizes the remembrance of Doodle and how he buried the scarlet ibis, and his guilt for it's death.
The color red is a symbol of death and war. In the scarlet ibis, the bird was red because it was foreshadowing death, in this case, it was the death of the crippled brother named Doodle. You may also notice that war is mentioned in this short story, and is represented by the two brothers. Going back to your original question, I think that red also was a symbol of the pain that both the scarlet ibis and doodle had to suffer.

In "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the two main characters are brothers - the older brother, who is the narrator, and Doodle, who is born with physical disabilities. They can be seen as foil characters because the older brother is driven by pride and a desire for normality, while Doodle is gentle and innocent, representing acceptance and vulnerability. Their contrasting qualities highlight the themes of pride, love, and the consequences of pushing others beyond their limits.
In the story The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle dies after he is running and a tree falls on him during a storm. His brother was running ahead of him and realized Doodle was no longer behind him. He went back to look for him and found him dead under the tree.
The Scarlet Ibis is a vividly colored bird with a scarlet red plumage, long legs, a long curved bill, and a distinct downward curve to its neck. Its feathers are a deep red-orange color, contrasting with its black wingtips.
