Depends on the maturity level of the reader...If I had to say, though, I'd say that The Golden Compass would be appropriate, as would be The Subtle Knife...The Amber Spyglass, on the other hand, might not need to be in a 12 year old's hands. It's more suited for the 14 year old crowd, due to the deaths and intricate plot and God-killing and what-not.
