This is an Aztec myth. Popocatepetl, a warrior, was in love with Ixtacyhuatl, a princess. (In some versions, he's from a neighboring tribe.) Her dad said whoever could successfully lead his warriors into battle would inherit the chief's land and marry Ixty. Popo goes off to battle and wins. He stays behind to deal with the aftermath of the battle. A jealous warrior goes back home and says that they were victorious, he himself was the hero, and Popo's dead. The king offers to let this guy marry Ixty. She drops dead at the wedding. Popo shows up and takes her body up into the mountains to watch over her. The gods turn them into volcanos. Her slumbers, but his occassionally smokes, when he's crying over her. Their are other versions where she doesn't immediately die, but her father says they can't marry. They run off together. She dies, he watches over her in the mountains, the gods take pity and turn them into volcanos.
